Wareham Police Arrest Sex Offender for Allegedly Recording Woman

UPDATE: According to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office, Mattos was placed on $5,000 cash bail and was ordered to stay away from Target store locations and have no contact with the victim.

WAREHAM (WBSM) — A Cape Cod registered sex offender with a history of making illicit recordings of women on his cell phone was arrested recently in Wareham for recording a woman while she was in the fitting room.

According to Wareham Police, officers responded to the Target store in the Wareham Crossing plaza on Cranberry Highway on June 9 for a report of a man recording a woman in the fitting room. The victim told officers the man had held the phone over the fitting room stall door as she was changing.

Surveillance video provided a description of the suspect, and he was seen on the footage leaving the store and pulling out of the parking lot on a moped. Police canvassed the area and located him through surveillance video on Main Street.

Police said the suspect – identified as Gregory Mattos, 37, of Mashpee – was placed into custody without incident. He is charged with photographing an unsuspecting nude person.

Target issued the following statement to WBSM:

The safety of our guests and team members is our top priority and we have robust procedures, policies and training in place to ensure that our stores are safe places to shop and work. We have zero tolerance for this type of behavior, and as soon as we became aware of the situation our team contacted the Wareham Police Department. We are assisting them with their investigation and will refer additional question to them at this time.

According to police, Mattos is a registered sex offender and has been involved in similar incidents in the past. In April 2016, Mattos was arrested for taking “upskirt” photos in the same shopping plaza and was charged with unlawful sexual surveillance.

At that time, he was already a registered Level 2 sex offender who was out on bail on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender.

In August 2019, he was arrested again for failure to register as a sex offender.

Mattos was released on cash bail on the latest charges and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Wareham District Court.
