A book about the scrimshaw collection at New Bedford Whaling Museum is getting recognition from a New England Heritage group. The organization Historic New England says the book by Stuart M. Frank has won its annual award that recognizes work advancing the understanding of New England Culture. In the mid-19th century, sailors departing on long sea voyages from the busy port of New Bedford created scrimshaw by carving materials harvested from whales. Frank is the Museum's Senior Curator Emeritus and will discuss the art of whalemen at an event at the Museum on Nov. 3. His book is titled ``Ingenious Contrivances, Curiously Carved: Scrimshaw in the New Bedford Whaling Museum.''
