MANSFIELD (WBSM) — A Mansfield man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Mansfield Police Department Monday night.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III identified the victim Tuesday morning as Manuel Casillas, 31.

911 Call Traced to Police Headquarters

According to the D.A.’s Office, Mansfield Police received a 911 call at about 7:08 p.m. on July 27 alerting them that a man with a possible firearm was in the parking lot. Police pinged the phone that made the call and traced it to the department lot.

Officers found the vehicle and saw a man inside with a firearm. They then took up a position to secure the perimeter and requested assistance from a SWAT team

SWAT Team and Drone Deployed to Parking Lot

About an hour later, investigators used a drone to determine that the man was no longer moving inside the vehicle. The SWAT team then entered the vehicle and found Casillas dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police recovered the gun from his hands.

State Police and DA Lead Investigation

The incident remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s Office and Mansfield Police.
