Wareham Jersey Mike’s Subs Set to Open February 10

WAREHAM — A taste of New Jersey is about to debut in Wareham.

One of two new Jersey Mike’s Subs locations on the SouthCoast is scheduled to open in Wareham on February 10, under the ownership of Matt West and Mike Esposito. It will be located in the Aldi plaza at the corner of Cranberry Highway and Tobey Road, across from Walmart.

Esposito and West will hold a grand opening and fundraiser from Wednesday, February 10 to Sunday, February 14 to support Wareham High School Boosters. Customers with a special fundraising coupon may make a minimum $3 contribution to Wareham High School Boosters in exchange for a regular sub. Customers must have a coupon to be eligible.

“We are very excited to bring Jersey Mike’s to the Wareham,” said West. “We are also very pleased to partner with Wareham High School Boosters. We look forward to continuing to give back to this great community.”

Another location will be opening in Fairhaven, with different owners, later this year.

According to the company, there are more than 2,500 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations open or under development across the country, and it was named the No. 1 fastest-growing sandwich chain in the 2020 Nation’s Restaurant News Top 200. It was also named to Newsweek’s 2020 list of America’s Best Customer Service, and was voted the best sandwich chain in America in a poll by Ranker.

According to press materials provided by Jersey Mike’s, the company started out in 1956 as Mike’s Subs in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. It expanded through the 1960s and 1970s. In 1975, the entire operation was purchased by Peter Cancro, a 17-year-old high school senior who had worked for Mike’s Subs since he was 14. He purchased the operation with the help of his football coach – even though at the time, Cancro wasn’t even old enough to legally slice a sub.

Cancro continued to expand the operation, and in 1987 began franchising under the name Jersey Mike’s Subs. He still serves as CEO for the company, and one of his guiding principles for the company is that it gives back to the communities in which its stores are located. Since 2010, Jersey Mike’s locations have raised more than $50 million for local charities.
