WAREHAM — A pet cat has died and a home destroyed after a fire in Wareham early Monday morning that also damaged a neighboring house.

Wareham officials said that just after 2 a.m. on Monday, both on- and off-duty fire crews were called out to a house fire at 33 Long Boat Road in West Wareham.

The home was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, with two more fire engines and a ladder company responding to help Engine One at the scene.

Within an hour, fire crews were able to put out the blaze, although officials said the house sustained "heavy damage" and a neighboring home sustained minor damage.

The three adult residents were able to escape unharmed, but one cat was killed in the fire.

The family's other cat, Jasmine, was found and given oxygen.

The Red Cross will help shelter the family.

Officials said the cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious but the fire remains under investigation.
