WAREHAM — Wareham firefighters responded to a fire in the basement of a Plymouth Avenue home early Sunday morning.

According to a release from the Wareham Fire Department, at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, two fire engines and other apparatus were dispatched to a reported fire in the basement of the home.

Fire crews arrived to find a fast-moving blaze in the basement that reached the first floor of the house.

The residents had already safely evacuated the home without injuries, according to the release.

Using two hose lines, firefighters quickly contained and then put out the flames.

Crews remained at the scene for several hours overhauling the damaged home and checking for hot spots.

In total, 25 fire department members responded to the blaze, with crews from Onset Fire Department assisting with fire station coverage.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
