A pair of electric vehicle chargers have been installed in the parking lot of the Wareham Stop & Shop, and soon they will begin showing up outside of the chain’s other SouthCoast locations as well.

The two chargers are located a few aisles apart in the parking lot, in the first spot closest to the store in each aisle. Each has a sign in place as well that marks it as “Electric Vehicle Charging.”

Although they have been installed and were lit up Monday night, the store manager told us that they’re still not ready for customer use yet because there is additional wiring needed. The charging stations are powered by Stop & Shop’s generators.

The LED lights running along the edges of the chargers are certainly attention-grabbing, and very futuristic-looking. Customers were walking up to them and checking them out on their way in and out of the store Monday night.

The manager said Stop & Shop has contracted Volta to provide EV charging stations at its stores, and that these ones were installed in Wareham about a week and a half ago.

The spaces are designed to allow customers with electric vehicles to charge them up while they’re inside the store and shopping for groceries.

The manager said that while some Stop & Shop stores on Cape Cod have Tesla charging stations outside of their locations, Volta is the company that will be installing charging stations outside the rest of the Stop & Shop stores.

The Stop & Shop chargers join other charging locations in town such as the Tesla Supercharger station in the Wareham Crossing plaza and the EVPassport chargers on Depot Street.
