SouthCoast Pummelled by Nor’Easter

Schools are closed and thousands are without power this morning as the SouthCoast is getting hammered by high winds and rain from a Nor'easter making its way through New England.

Trees, poles and electrical lines are down all across the region, blocking roads, causing power outages, and preventing fire crews and other emergency workers from getting to alarms.

And it's no wonder — the National Weather Service reports unofficial wind gust estimates of up to 94 miles per hour on Martha's Vineyard, with Cape Cod and the entire coastal region seeing hurricane-force winds.

Gusts at Horseneck Beach in Westport reached a reported 75 miles per hour, while winds in Fairhaven hit an estimated 66 miles per hour and nearly 50 miles per hour in New Bedford.

Downed lines are also sparking fires in a few locations.

According to scanner chatter, two people were rescued off a boat in the Popes Island Marina after the dock was damaged in the storm, and a boat has reportedly sunk at the same marina.

Crews also responded to an airplane that blew over the fence at the New Bedford airport.

Earlier scanner reports detailed fire departments chasing multiple alarms in almost all area communities as more and more residents lost power.

There are also some low-lying spots with minor flooding reported.
