New Big Y Supermarket in Fairhaven Taking Shape With Spring Opening Planned

Construction is progressing on a Big Y Supermarket in Fairhaven, which will create strong competition for Stop & Shop, located less than a mile to the east along Route 6, and Walmart, not far away on Alden Road.

Big Y's Growing Regional Footprint Across the SouthCoast

Fun 107's Nancy Hall first reported in November, 2025 that Big Y Foods, Inc, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, plans to open two area stores: the Fairhaven location, and one at the former Christmas Tree Shops on Faunce Corner Road in Dartmouth, in 2027.

Exterior construction on the Dartmouth store has not yet begun.

Shaking Up Local Supermarket Competition

Once completed, the new Dartmouth Big Y will be situated less than a mile from the existing Stop & Shop and Aldi. Additionally, it will be just a short drive from the area’s only Shaw's Supermarket in New Bedford, as well as the nearby Target, Walmart, and BJ’s Wholesale Club located along Route 6.

A Complete Rebuild at the Former Fairhaven Big Lots Site

Rather than remodel the Fairhaven storefront, which formerly housed a Big Lots, Big Y has gutted the interior and is doing a total rebuild, including its trademark facade outside. According to Hall, the 62,000- square-foot Fairhaven location is expected to open in the spring.

Big Y Foods, Inc. has erected a fence around the construction site in the parking lot shared with other retail outlets, including next-door neighbor Tractor Supply to the west and Dollar Tree to the east.
