Perhaps the most unique-looking of all the Spirit Halloween stores is located right here in Massachusetts, inside a familiar landmark that has welcomed visitors to Cape Cod for decades.

This past summer, Christmas Tree Shops filed for bankruptcy and later liquidated all of its inventory and closed down all of its locations, including the iconic thatched-roof-and-windmill building at the base of the Sagamore Bridge.

As with any store closing, the joke on social media in the immediate aftermath was that any vacant Christmas Tree Shops location would probably become a Spirit Halloween.

Nobody ever thought, though, that the Sagamore CTS would actually become one, until the popular Halloween chain confirmed it on the Spirit Halloween website.

The store opened up in its new incarnation earlier this month, and we stopped by on a recent Friday afternoon to check out how the rows of Halloween decorations, costumes and horror movie paraphernalia fit into the post-and-beam interior of the building.

It's like the paranormal meets the Pilgrims.

With its spacious floor plan, there’s plenty of room to wander around the aisles to see all the goods for sale and experience the animatronic figures on display throughout the store.

There are no traces of the store’s former life; even the window that allowed shoppers to peek into the insides of the once-working windmill is now blocked by temporary walls filled with children’s costumes.

Each year, Spirit Halloween ups its game with its products, and this year is no different – but seeing it in a store that was long associated with driftwood paperweights, carved wooden fishermen, salt water taffy and other such trinkets somehow makes it seem even spookier.

Granted, Spirit Halloween will only last until, well, just about Halloween, and nobody’s really talking about what might become of the building after that. Hopefully, it will retain its legendary look, and find something befitting its stature to become a permanent resident.

However, it just sits around vacant until next Halloween, awaiting Spirit’s return – that adds a touch of creepiness that will add to the ambiance.
