Rain on Snow Could Collapse Roofs
With the latest round of dry, fluffy snow that has piled on our roofs, experts are warning us that the snow can become just like a sponge, absorbing a lot of weight when it rains, that could collapse roofs. Flat commercial roofs are most susceptible when rain on top of snow adds so much more stress and weight to structures. Add to that, drains clogged and not properly ridding the water buildup, and you have a recipe for potential and expensive roof collapse. The rain could create roof ice dams that cause water backup and lead to interior damage. Remember, this applies also to flat roofs like on a garage or carport and porches, too. Be careful and only shovel on a flat roof if it's safe to stand upon and take precautions not to slip or potentially fall from the roof due to slippery conditions.
