Residents in Dighton are expressing shock after racist graffiti was spray painted on a sign in town.

The letters "KKK" were spray painted on a sign for a residential development on Maris Ln.

Neighbors tell NBC10 that the graffiti was quickly cleaned up but they're still upset about the incident.

"That kind of hate and bigotry does not belong in Dighton," a neighbor said. "And it's not a typical thing for Dighton."

Some civil rights leaders are also concerned.

"You have a lot of people with a lot of rhetoric that are really diving this country," said Providence NAACP President Jim Vincent, "and I think it's given license to some people to come out and act out."

This follows similar incidents of vandalism that took place last month in Swansea, Pawtucket, R.I., and Cranston, R.I.
