More oysters and cleaner water could be in the future for Fairhaven's Little Bay.

John Kachmar from the Nature Conservancy says a proposed artificial reef would help grow the local oyster population. Kachmar says the increased oyster population will provide better water quality in the bay.

Kachmar asked the board of selectmen for a letter in support of the project to help ensure a grant from the state environmental trust. The $50,000 grant would cover half of the $100,000 projected project. The Conservancy would cover the remaining amount with their own funds.

The reef will occupy a 1 acre area in the bay and will not interfere with any recreational use in the water.

If approved, the project is expected to begin next summer.
