I don't know about you, but there’s something about seeing a frozen treat truck rolling through the streets of New Bedford that instantly screams summer, and now one familiar local business is taking things to the next level.

Back in 2021, Sorbae Frozen Treats owner Monica Ferracioli first opened up shop at Fort Taber, serving up handcrafted frozen pops that quickly built a following across the SouthCoast. Fast forward five years later, and Sorbae is officially hitting the road with a brand-new mobile pop truck designed to bring its frozen creations to even more people this summer.

“We’ve been calling it a truck, even though it’s technically a van,” Ferracioli joked.

Whatever you want to call it, one thing is certain: it’s giving Sorbae much more freedom to travel. Unlike the business’s previous trailer setup, which was more stationary, the new mobile truck allows the company to pop up at multiple events in a single day, including private parties, community festivals, corporate gatherings and beyond.

From Fort Taber to the Open Road

The truck already made its official debut during April’s AHA! Night in downtown New Bedford, and according to Ferracioli, the response exceeded expectations.

“It was amazing,” she said. “And it wasn’t even that hot out. I was so surprised.”

The mobile setup focuses exclusively on Sorbae’s signature frozen pops, which have become popular for being dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan-friendly without sacrificing flavor. Ferracioli said one of her favorite parts of running the business is experimenting with creative new combinations and figuring out ways to make unique flavors accessible for everyone.

“I love coming up with new flavors,” she said. “Seeing a random flavor and thinking, ‘I wonder if I could make that dairy-free and gluten-free?’”

A Bigger Summer Ahead for Sorbae

With permits currently expanding town by town throughout Massachusetts, Sorbae is preparing to bring the truck far beyond New Bedford. Ferracioli said she has already worked events in Boston and is hoping to expand into Rhode Island soon as well, with stops planned throughout places like Fall River, Dartmouth, Westport and even toward Cape Cod.

As if the truck launch wasn’t enough, Sorbae is also teasing something new called the “Pop Drop Club,” a monthly subscription featuring exclusive flavors available in mini or full-size options. Customers can even reorder their favorites in larger packs once they discover a flavor they love.

Not bad for a small local business that started with a simple idea at the Fort just a few summers ago.
