Mass. Governor’s Race Heats Up as Candidates Finally Agree to Debate

The 2026 Massachusetts election season has been anything but quiet, what with "Signaturegate," a controversy over bad nomination signatures that saw two of the three Republican candidates for lieutenant governor booted from the general election ballot, and the verbal blood-letting that is the Ed Markey-Seth Moulton primary for the Democratic nomination for Markey's long-held U.S Senate seat.

But things may get even more exciting.

Could we finally see the candidates for Massachusetts governor debate? It's not only possible, but it's quite likely, as suddenly everyone wants to debate.

Until now, Mike Minogue has refused to debate. Period.

The Massachusetts Debate Stalemate Breaks

Minogue has declined every invitation to mix it up with fellow Republican Brian Shortsleeve before their September 1 primary election, which has frustrated the hell out of the underdog candidate.

Shortsleeve has offered to meet Minogue "anytime, anywhere" in advance of the primary, but Minogue has declined, when his camp bothered to respond at all to the challenges.

Governor Maura Healey has agreed to take part in two debates with whoever wins the Republican primary. Minogue has found his tongue.

Media Consortium Steps In

One debate will be held at WCVB-TV 5 in Needham, according to the station, to be hosted by a media consortium that includes WCVB, the Public Broadcasting Station WBUR, and the Boston Globe, in partnership with El Planeta and the Bay State Banner.

Details of the other debate are unclear at this time, as are the date and time for the WCVB debate.

Shortsleeve issued a statement saying that while he looks forward to "lively discussion" in the debate with Healey, "It's unfortunate Mike Minogue is denying Republican primary voters the opportunity to see us debate."

Minogue also issued a statement in which he said, "I look forward to debating Governor Maura Healey."

Down-Ticket Debates Take Shape

State House News Service reported Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll and Republican challenger New Bedford City Councilor Shawn Oliver have also agreed to debate.

The Massachusetts general election is November 3, 2026.
