Flock Cameras Leads to Arrest in New Bedford Shots Fired Case

NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A juvenile has been arrested in connection with a shots fired incident that occurred last month in New Bedford’s Near North End.

New Bedford Police said the investigation began on July 27 when officers responded to North Front Street and Collette Street for a report of shots fired. Witnesses reported seeing a group of people they believed to be juveniles, one of whom took out a handgun and fired about five rounds before the group fled the area on foot.

Officers recovered five spent shell casings at the scene. There were no injuries reported.

Investigators Used Flock Cameras to Track the Suspect

On August 4, detectives concluded the investigation and obtained a search warrant and an arrest warrant for the juvenile suspect. Police said that the detectives utilized Flock License Plate Reader (LPR) technology and security camera footage to identify the suspect.

Recovery of the Firearm

Police said that while arresting the suspect, detectives recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun with a defaced serial number from the juvenile. The gun was loaded with seven rounds of .40-caliber ammunition with an additional round in the chamber.

Charges Filed Against the Juvenile

The juvenile was arrested on the outstanding warrant and was also charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, assault with intent to murder, and intentional or reckless discharge of a firearm.

His identity is not being released due to his age.
