WAREHAM — A historic church in Wareham burst into a three-alarm fire early Saturday morning.

Multiple media outlets report that the 78-year-old St. Patrick’s Church, located near Tobey Hospital on 82 High Street, is closed as the result of $500,000 in damages caused by the fire.

The Wareham Fire Department arrived on scene just after 1:00 a.m., and put out the blaze with assistance provided by crews from Onset, Carver, Marion, Rochester and Bourne fire departments. Crews knocked down the fire and assessed the damages.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
