FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — America may run on Dunkin’, but this Fairhaven cow preferred to walk to go get his morning donut.

Just after 10:30 a.m. today, I made the turn off Route 240 in Fairhaven to head down Bridge Street to a doctor’s appointment, and that’s when I saw a cow walking down the road, heading toward Bridge Street Gas.

It turns out that cow was Kevin the Holstein, who lives at Little Patch of Heaven Sanctuary down on Mill Road. Alexis Furtado of Little Patch of Heaven (and Blazing Saddles Pony Parties and Petting Zoos) told us Kevin “wanted a donut for breakfast.”

She described him as a “young cow with a big heart.”

“He was rescued from an auction by Second Chance Stables in Savoy, Massachusetts after seeing countless calves in poor condition – one even with a broken leg,” she said.

Furtado said Kevin was “sick and struggling” and that he was “weak, cow-hocked and battling severe diarrhea.”

The folks at Little Patch of Heaven weren’t sure if Kevin would be able to come all the way back from his afflictions. He underwent months of treatment, including antibiotics and steroids. Slowly but surely, he began to get his strength back.

Now, Furtado said Kevin is “thriving” and has become a “joyful spirit” at Little Patch of Heaven.

“We are proud to say he has found his forever home here with his best friend, Doug, another young calf that needed rescue,” she said. “Together, they bring endless smiles to the sanctuary, where Kevin enjoys his new life surrounded by love, 150-plus other rescued animal friends, and our amazing community.”

And, of course, the occasional Dunkin’ donut for breakfast, which he got from the drive-moo – err, drive-thru.

“Kevin is proof that even the toughest journeys can lead to lives filled with laughter, love and endless possibility,” Furtado said.
