Wareham Acting Police Chief John Walcek says Wareham is a very busy place, and he's released statistics from 2019 to prove it.

The chief says his department received more than 50,000 calls in 2019 for everything from building checks to motor vehicle stops to serious felonies.

Officers made more than 1,200 arrests, along with issuing criminal summonses and taking people into protective custody. and responded to 600 domestic disturbances.

Police investigated 574 motor vehicle accidents and wrote more than one-thousand motor vehicle citations, with 426 written for offenses on Cranberry Highway.

Walcek says overdose calls last year totaled 116, compared with 162 in 2018. The chief says while overdose calls went down by 46, drug addiction is still a very serious problem in Wareham.

The department also received more than 11,000 911 calls in 2019.

Chief Walcek added, "communication officers and police officers in Wareham work very hard to protect people."
