Young children were flocking to Harrington Park in New Bedford's West End on Tuesday, the new water-spray there offering a chance to cool off from the summer heat.

Kathleen Richardson was there with her grandchildren. "Its a great place for the kids, very special," said Richardson.

The newly refurbished park includes a playground, the water-spray, new landscaping and basketball courts, paid for with state and federal funding.

Mayor Jon Mitchell says Harrington Park is also one of 20 sites around the city offering healthy lunches this summer to young people ages 18 and under. "This is good stuff," said the Mayor, "we really want kids to have a successful summer, to learn a lot and have some fun, and this program enables them to have a better summer than they otherwide would."

The Mayor joined other city officials and neighborhood residents at Harrington Park in kicking off the Play In The Park Summer Food Program .
