UPDATE (8pm) - The woman who was hospitalized after a drowning incident at Swifts Beach in Wareham has passed away.

Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh says the woman, identified as 64-year-old Carol Whitney of Templeton, Massachusetts, died at the hospital despite life saving efforts.

Fellow beachgoers and first responders performed CPR on the woman around 11:30am Wednesday before she was transported to the hospital.

It's unclear what caused Whitney to drown.

Original Story (1:43pm) - A woman is in critical condition after a drowning incident at Swifts Beach in Wareham.

Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh says police responded to the beach around 11:30 Wednesday morning after a report of a drowning incident. When they arrived, several people on the beach were attempting to perform CPR on an adult female who was seen swimming just before the incident.

Officers continued CPR until the arrival of EMS personnel, who transported the woman to Tobey Hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Her name is being withheld until notification of family members regarding the incident.
