Wareham Police: No Truth to Attempted Kidnapping Post

Wareham Police took to Facebook Tuesday night to dispel a rumor that was circulating across the social media platform that there was an alleged kidnapping attempt at a local retail store.

The post, issued at 8:29 p.m., was intended to clear up a post that had started circulating around just about an hour or so prior, including in some local town Facebook groups.

“There is a Facebook post circulating that claims children are being kidnapped from a retail store in town and that it happens ‘all the time.’ This is absolutely not true,” the department posted on its official Facebook page.

The post circulating around read like this:

“I just got this text from a close friend. My friend's kids were almost kidnapped Sunday night at Target in Wareham. She was with her husband and two kids, and these guys were not scared! They called the cops after they got away and the cops that it happens all the time specifically at that Target because it's close to the highway. The cops said they steal the kid, get on the highway and are gone! 4 cars were involved and roughly 10 men, definitely a professional job. Please, please be hyper-vigilant when you are out and about with your kids!”

The circulating post, or something similar, has popped up on social media in the past.

Be careful about any post that mentions it came from a friend, rather than the supposed victim posting it themselves. In addition, always check with the local police department and websites such as WBSM.com and Fun107.com, because if there is any validity to the story, police would want to make sure the public had as much warning as possible.
