Mass Environmental Police Sedate and Relocate Bear Near Cape Cod Canal
BOURNE (WBSM) — A black bear had to be sedated and removed from the woods near the Bourne Scenic Park campground Sunday morning.
According to a Bourne Police Facebook post, both the police department and Bourne’s Department of Natural Resources had been monitoring reports for the past few days of a black bear spotted in Buzzards Bay.
This bear could have been the same one spotted recently in other local communities.
Bear Spotted Across Multiple SouthCoast Towns
Earlier this week, a black bear was reported in Middleboro and also caught on camera in Wareham by the Wareham Department of Natural Resources on Friday morning. Black bears can certainly cover a distance like that in a single day, especially at this time of year, during their mating season.
Sunday Morning Campground Sighting
On the morning of July 12, at about 7:30 a.m., Bourne Police received reports that the bear had made its way into the Bourne Scenic Park campground along the Cape Cod Canal.

“DNR and officers responded and monitored the movements of the bear. Officers observed the bear go back into the woods without issue,” police wrote. “Due to the proximity of the bear to a heavily populated area, Massachusetts Environmental Police responded.”
Mass Environmental Police Step In
The Environmental Police eventually determined the best course of action would be to sedate the bear and relocate it to a safer location. The bear was removed from the area and moved to the new location without incident.
