WAREHAM (WBSM) — A 57-year-old woman was struck and killed by a motor vehicle on the Cranberry Highway in Wareham Sunday night.

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said that in addition to the woman killed, another male pedestrian was injured.

Wareham Police received a call at about 8:40 p.m. on February 1 from a person who said they were the passenger in a Volvo that had struck two pedestrians that were in the roadway in the area of 2796 Cranberry Highway.

First responders arrived to find the two injured pedestrians. They were both transported to a local hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.

One Pedestrian Deceased, Another Other Injured

Her name has not yet been released, as the D.A.’s Office is still in the process of identifying her and contacting her next of kin. The condition of the man who survived was not released.

Road Conditions and Visibility at the Scene of the Wareham Pedestrian Crash

Both the driver and the passenger of the Volvo were interviewed by state police, and both said they were traveling south down the Cranberry Highway when they came toward a bend in the road.

“As they traveled around the bend, they noticed two individuals on the road, and stated they could not avoid hitting the pedestrians as there was an oncoming vehicle in the opposite lane at that same time,” the D.A.’s Office said. “They said they had been driving the speed limit at the time of the incident and had not been distracted when coming around the bend.

The Volvo driver also immediately pulled over after striking the pedestrians.

The Surviving Pedestrian Offers Insight into Fatal Wareham Crash

The surviving pedestrian was also interviewed. He said they had been walking south on the Cranberry Highway, and that there was no sidewalk to walk on because it was covered in snow. He was walking on the white fog line, while the woman accompanying him was walking with the use of a walker closer to the sidewalk.

“While walking, the first pedestrian stated they were hit by a passenger side mirror of a black truck and got knocked down. The woman moved toward the roadway following the initial incident and was struck by another vehicle, the Volvo,” the D.A.’s Office said. “The black truck turned around into the northbound lane immediately prior to the fatal collision. The surviving pedestrian was unsure whether he was struck by the Volvo or if he was knocked down by the woman as she was struck.”
