SWANSEA (WBSM) — Some quick thinking by a resident helped keep a house fire in Swansea this morning from becoming a far worse incident.

According to Swansea Deputy Fire Chief Michael Patterson, crews responded to a 911 call reporting a house fire at 262 Mount Fair Circle at about 3:47 a.m. today.

He said crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the house, as residents were in the process of evacuating the home and removing several pets.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which had been confined to one bedroom and had originated on a mattress. The cause appears to be accidental, Patterson said, but the fire is under investigation.

"Thanks to the resident who closed the bedroom door when they found the fire, their actions really helped keep the flames at bay until we arrived and were able to get a handline into action," Patterson said. "Our crews did a great job quickly getting to the source of the fire to prevent potential widespread damage."

No injuries were reported, and no one was displaced by the fire, Patterson said.

These Common Massachusetts Plants Are Toxic to Pets

They may be pretty, but these household and garden plants commonly sold in Massachusetts could actually make your pet severely ill if ingested. Watch out!
