Fire officials say a tenament at 70 Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford's South End is unliveable right now, following a fire there Sunday morning.

District Fire Chief James Fortin tells WBSM News, the smokey fire broke out in a third floor bedroom, and spread into the walls.

"After we opened up the roof, we were able to get up there and put the fire out," said Fortin. "There was extensive damage to the third floor, and smoke and water damage to the first and second floors."

Fortin says the fire was accidental in nature and was likely started by smoking materials. He says one firefighter was taken to St.Luke's Hospital after complaining of chest pains.

The seven occupants of the house are being assisted by the Red Cross.
