New Bedford Fire Displaces 11
NEW BEDFORD — A fire at a North Front Street apartment building this morning has displaced 11 city residents — despite firefighters extinguishing the blaze just 16 minutes after it was reported.
New Bedford Fire Department spokesperson Steve Medeiros said fire crews were called out to the fire at 295 N. Front St. at 8:14 a.m. on Tuesday, managing to put out the fire by 8:30 a.m.
Just one room in the six-family, three-floor building had caught fire, he said, adding, "the Engine 8 crew knocked it down really quick."
Only three residents in a different apartment were inside the building at the time, according to Medeiros, as the others were at work or school.
All three people were safely evacuated.
But all 11 residents of the building have been displaced, and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
