New Bedford Man Arrested After Violent South End Clash Involving Knife and Baseball Bat

NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A New Bedford man has been arrested in connection with a violent incident in the city’s South End Tuesday evening resulting in one person injured by a knife and another struck with a baseball bat.

New Bedford Police Response on Brock Avenue

According to New Bedford Police, officers responded to Brock Avenue at about 6:15 p.m. on August 11 for a report of a disturbance.

Officers arrived and learned a fight had taken place between multiple individuals. During the altercation, one person suffered injuries from a knife that were not life-threatening, while another person was struck with a baseball bat.

Attempt to Flee Ends in Crash

Police said that during the incident, a vehicle was taken from the scene. They said the individual who suffered the knife-related injuries entered the vehicle attempting to seek medical treatment. However, that person did not possess the key fob and subsequently crashed into a parked vehicle in the area.

One person, identified as Zachary Silva, 30, of New Bedford, has been arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Ongoing Investigation and Previous Dispute

The incident remains under investigation, and police said additional charges are forthcoming.

“It was determined that the altercation stemmed from an incident that occurred the previous day, during which an individual was assaulted at his residence,” police said.
