New Bedford Firefighters Tackle North End Blaze, Nine Displaced
NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford firefighters have put out a house fire in the city's North End that has displaced nine residents, five of them children.
Fire crews were called to 191 Belleville Rd. between Ashley Boulevard and Acushnet Avenue by multiple 911 calls just before 2 p.m. on Monday for a structure fire in a three-family home, according to a release from the department.
On arrival, the third floor porch, stairway, and attic of the building were engulfed in flames.
The fire was extinguished at around 2:40 p.m., with crews remaining on scene to check for further extension.
No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported, the department noted in the release.
The cause of the fire was found to be discarded smoking materials.
Although the exact number has yet to be confirmed, it is believed that nine people — four adults and five children — have been displaced by the fire, according to scanner chatter.
The Red Cross has been called to assist.
