Why President Trump Telephoned Massachusetts Senator Liz Warren
The Punch and Judy routine that is President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) may be easing up just a bit, as two of America's most antagonistic political foes spoke in what a White House statement called a "productive" phone call on Monday.
Who'd have thought it possible?
Punch and Judy, by the way, are the central characters in a violent centuries-old English puppet show in which they, and others, beat the bejeezus out of each other for laughs, often using sticks and other things.
While Trump and Warren – whom he refers to as "Pocahontas" while she has called him a white supremacist and a dictator – have never pounded on each other physically, they certainly have pummeled each other with words.
Warren posted to X, "Donald Trump called me today."
I'm sure the call was not to inquire about the price of cod landed in New Bedford. I'd also bet that Trump didn't call to invite Warren out for some pow-wow chow over a Michelob Ultra, Warren's favorite beer.

Trump called her after she spent the morning tearing him to shreds during a speech to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
"After my speech, the President called me, and I delivered this same message on affordability to him directly," Warren said. She said she challenged Trump in her speech to "use his leverage and pick up the phone" if he "really wanted to get something done, including capping credit card interest rates or lowering housing costs."
The White House issued a statement to Fox News Digital verifying the call.
"President Trump and Sen. Warren had a productive call about credit card interest rates and housing affordability for the American people," the statement read.
Holy cow! No wonder birds were flying backwards today.
