A man who police say passed out behind the wheel of a parked car was initially ordered to appear in court on a drunken-driving charge, and later arrested following an alleged sandwich-stealing incident at the Wareham Walmart.

On Tuesday at around 12:50 a.m., Wareham Police Officer Eric Machado located a running vehicle running with a male sitting inside it at a parking lot on C.W. Bishop Avenue, according to a statement from the Wareham Police Department.

Police say that upon further investigation, it appeared that the male was under the influence of alcohol. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Michael Pina, 34, of no certain address, was transported to Tobey Hospital.

Pina was initially summoned to court on three charges: operating under the influence, third offense; operating with a revoked license; and possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Later that day, at around 2:30 p.m., the same man was arrested after police allegedly observed him in the aisle of a local Walmart eating a sandwich he had not paid for.

One of the officers on that detail realized that Pina had two outstanding warrants for his arrest. Pina was held pending an appearance at Wareham District Court on Wednesday morning.
