Fairhaven Police Officer Injured, Two Families Displaced in Fire

FAIRHAVEN — A Fairhaven police officer sustained minor injuries in a fire at an apartment complex Sunday that has displaced two families.

Fairhaven Fire Chief Todd Correia said in a release that the officer has been treated and released from St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, and the families are being assisted by the Red Cross.

One cat was also rescued and is being treated and held for observation at an animal hospital, according to the chief.

An automatic alarm alerted the department to the fire at the Fairhaven Village multi-story apartment complex at 330 Main St. just after 4 p.m. Sunday.

Correia said crews arrived to find heavy smoke on the east wing's third and fourth floors.

The source of the fire turned out to be a room in unit 302D, with both the room and its contents engulfed in flames.

Firefighters evacuated the east wing and worked to put out the blaze, containing it to the one unit and getting the fire under control by 4:30 p.m.

Both the unit that caught fire and the unit below it sustained damage estimated at a value between $25,000 and $50,000, according to the chief.

Crews fully cleared the scene at 8:30 p.m., Correia noted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Mattapoisett, Acushnet, and New Bedford fire departments provided mutual aid during the incident.
