This month is the 34th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and three organizations in Fairhaven are planning a celebration to recognize that landmark law.

It's an occasion to celebrate people with disabilities, promote their visibility and applaud their achievements.

M.O. L.I.F.E. Inc, the Fairhaven Commission on Disability, and the Fairhaven Belonging Committee are teaming up for the Second Annual Diverse Abilities Celebration, scheduled for Sunday, July 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fairhaven Council on Aging and Recreation Building, located at 229 Huttleston Avenue.

Traci Welch, a job developer at M.O. L.I.F.E. in Fairhaven, assists people with disabilities to find employment opportunities. She visited Townsquare Sunday to promote the celebration, and issue a public invitation to all.

"People with disabilities need to be seen and recognized," Welch said. "Approximately 26 percent of your neighbors, co-workers, your friends and family members have some sort of disability."

"Last year, more then 200 people of all abilities attended the celebration," she said. "It was definitely an amazing event, and we want to keep doing it."

This year's celebration will include a talent show, two dozen vendors offering resources for those with disabilities and their families, health and wellness activities, yoga, and food (lunch is $7).

"We're continually working to make sure that people have a better day tomorrow than they did today," Welch said. "Having this Diverse Abilities Celebration hopefully continues year after year."

Welch also said the event will be held on the 28th, rain or shine. If it rains, the celebration will be moved into the Rec Center building.

Townsquare Sunday airs Sundays at 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. on WBSM. If your organization would like to be part of a future Townsquare Sunday program, please contact the host at jim.phillips@townsquaremedia.com.

New Bedford Boy With Spina Bifida Gets Inside Look at Police and Fire Station

Joseph Aguilera, a five-year-old New Bedford boy with spina bifida, was WBSM's Mini Miracle for 2022. When we asked Joseph what he wants to be when he grows up, he said he wanted to be a New Bedford Police officer. When the police found out Joseph wants to join their ranks someday, he was invited to tour the South End Public Safety Center and visit the police, fire and animal control departments.
