Before You Leave the Dock, a Local Boating Pro Says You Must Check These 5 Things

There is still lots of summer left in 2026, with plenty of time for boaters and family members to enjoy time on the water.

Noah Santos knows what safe boating is all about, and what is not so safe. He runs a company called TowBoatU.S., responding to vessels in distress.

Santos oversees four locations around Cape Cod, including his newest port in Falmouth. He spoke with Townsquare Sunday about safe boating and some "do's" and "don'ts" for those heading to the water.

Santos describes his company as like "AAA for the water," providing marine assistance services for its members. "Our goal is to get people home safely," he said.

Santos said his company responds to 900 to 1,000 calls annually, with July and August usually the busiest months of the year.

5 Essential Safety Checks Before Leaving the Dock

Santos shared some tips with us to help boaters have a fun day on the water.

• 1. Check the weather forecast before heading out.
• 2. Check to make sure your engine has enough gasoline. According to Santos, a surprising number of vessels run out of gas while on the water and need a tow back to the dock.
• 3. Boaters should file a float plan with a friend, and check in by phone if you are arriving home late.
• 4. Don't leave the dock without life jackets and flares, and make sure the vessel's horn and navigation lights work.
• 5. Make sure your anchor and VHF radio are in working order.

The Responsibility of a Vessel Operator

"The operator of the boat is responsible for the safety of everyone onboard," Santos said. "It's a large responsibility that people sometimes take for granted, so be safe out there."
