Live Music, Free Food, and Local Impact: Inside Big Brothers Big Sisters’ New Bedford Event
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts is inviting the community to a free event on Wednesday, August 12 at Cisco Kitchen and Bar in New Bedford. There will be music, food and beverages, and a chance to learn more about how you can get involved in being a mentor for kids.
Chelsy Baker and Kim Barros from Big Brothers Big Sisters visited Townsquare Sunday this week to explain what their organization is all about and spread the word about the "Meet the Mission" event at Cisco.
What to Expect at the "Meet the Mission" Event in New Bedford
"It's an exciting opportunity for people in our area to learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters, and more importantly, mingle with others who have been part of the program, and listen to some great music," Baker said.
"We're also hoping to build a community connection with people in the South End, and we're hoping they will stop by," Barros said.

Making Mentorship Accessible on the SouthCoast
Both Barros and Baker said people shouldn't be intimidated about becoming a "Big" to a young person. "It's a fun experience," Barros said. "It's not meant to be overwhelming or stressful. It's really providing a young person with an opportunity to experience something different."
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts is currently working with 73 matches here on the SouthCoast.
Local Programs Impacting New Bedford and UMass Dartmouth
The organization also has a program with Carney Academy in New Bedford, where "Bigs" visit students once a week, eating lunch and doing other activities. There is also a program at UMass Dartmouth where young people are bused on campus and spend time with students who serve as mentors.
You can learn more about these programs by attending "Meet the Mission" on Wednesday, August 12 at Cisco Kitchen and Bar, East Rodney French Boulevard, New Bedford. Live music will be provided by the classic rock band French Lick and others. There's free food and beverages and plenty of good information about helping kids. The event is for those 18 and older.
