The White House has issued a decree to public schools across the nation, saying the districts should allow transgender students to use bathrooms of their choice.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in the letter there is no room in public schools for discrimination of any kind.

Dartmouth Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Bonny Gifford tells WBSM News her district has dealt with the issue on a case-by-case basis. "While we have not encountered any issues yet, we certainly will be looking at is there more that we need to do to make sure that all of our students feel safe and supported," says Dr. Gifford.

Dr. Gifford says as far as she knows, there is one transgender student at Dartmouth High School. She says separate accomodations have been made for that student.

However, Dr. Gifford does have questions about the order. "What kind of financial burden might this place on school districts if, in fact, it's about putting in different kinds of facilities?" The decree identifies bathrooms and locker rooms as areas in schools transgender students have their choice of using.

The White House is threatening to pull federal funding from schools if they refuse to comply.
