BOSTON — Brockton native and first female Massachusetts House Majority Leader Claire Cronin has been sworn in as the new U.S. Ambassador to Ireland.

Cronin has served as the state representative for the 11th Plymouth District, which includes parts of Easton and Brockton, since 2012.

She was named House Majority Leader in 2021 before being tapped for the ambassador role by President Joe Biden in June and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in December.

Her grandfather hails from the northern County Donegal, she told officials at a virtual confirmation hearing in September.

The longtime attorney replaces former ambassador Edward Crawford at Dublin's Deerfield Residence.

Crawford resigned from the role in January 2021, with chargé d'affaires Alexandra McKnight performing the ambassador's duties in the interim.
