BROCKTON (WBSM) — An East Weymouth man has been charged with attempted murder stemming from a crash this past weekend at Bridgewater State University that injured two pedestrians.
Arraignment and Mental Health Evaluation
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz announced that Steven Mayle, 44, was arraigned today in Brockton District Court on two counts each of attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, and leaving the scene of personal injury, and one count each of reckless operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation.
Mayle was ordered held without bail and ordered to undergo a competency evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital. He is scheduled to return to court on October 23.
Scene Details and Student Injuries
The incident took place on the morning of Saturday, October 3. At about 10:45 a.m., Bridgewater Police and BSU Campus Police received reports of a motor vehicle crash near the university’s Moakley Center.
Two BSU students were found at the scene and taken to area hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not provided by the D.A.’s Office, but WPRI reported that one of the students is in the hospital with injuries that are serious but not life-threatening, and the other suffered minor injuries.
Mayle was later identified as the driver of the Chevrolet Spark that was involved in the crash. He was placed into custody before being transported for medical treatment.

WPRI also reported that BSU President Frederick Clark, Jr. sent out an email to families saying that Mayle “intentionally drove his vehicle toward the victims” but that there was “absolutely no evidence that the driver…was targeting those specific students.”
