Fall River native Yorgan “The Mad Titan” De Castro added another win to his MMA resume over the weekend at Eagle FC 47 against one of his toughest opponents to date.

While he left the cage with a TKO victory over Junior dos Santos, the path to his victory on Saturday night was not what DeCastro had in mind.

After two hard rounds, De Castro came into the third round down on the scorecards, and he needed a big moment to turn the tide. His moment arrived when JDS threw a cross at De Castro’s head, dislocating his own shoulder in the process and immediately retreating in hopes of recovering quickly.

De Castro quickly noticed and began pointing at his opponent to get the attention of the referee, allowing the referee to step in, evaluate JDS, and eventually call the fight off, resulting in a win for De Castro.

De Castro was overcome with emotion when reality sank in that he just beat one of his idols in the cage, but his post-fight celebration was received poorly by fans.

Social media started to get fiery as fans accused De Castro of celebrating the injury of JDS, not just the victory, and De Castro was forced to apologize and defend himself in the post-fight conference.

“I want to apologize for the poor sportsmanship because I celebrated, I think, too hard,” De Castro said. “I was screaming, and I didn’t scream because he got injured, because I do respect the man a lot and I’ve been looking up to him. He’s a great human being, not just a great fighter."

While people were quick to judge De Castro on his celebration, I think it speaks volumes about De Castro’s character when he got the referee involved instead of rushing in on an injured opponent.

“I saw he hurt himself and I stopped. I didn’t charge forward,” he said. “But I apologize for the way I celebrated, and I hope he’s OK.”

While JDS had an excellent performance for the first two rounds, the self-inflicted injury was his ultimate demise. It’s a hard truth for the fight game, but a win is a win, and The Mad Titan improves his Eagle FC record to 2-0 in the heavyweight division.
