Wareham Man Charged in Home Explosion Held on $10K Bail
WAREHAM (WBSM) — The Wareham man who was arrested following an explosion at his home earlier this month was arraigned today and held on $10,000 cash bail.
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said that Mark Halpin, 50, was arraigned in Wareham District Court on one count each of possession of explosives and secreting, throwing, launching or placing of explosives.
If Halpin is released on the $10,000 cash bail, he is ordered to wear a GPS monitor, remain in home confinement, and not possess any weapons or incendiary devices. He also must continue pre-existing mental health treatment as a condition of his release.
Explosion Investigation in Wareham
The charges date back to October 3, when members of the Massachusetts State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with Wareham Police and the Wareham Fire Department, responded to Halpin’s home on Aunt Maryville Lane in West Wareham.

There, they found Halpin, who had sustained burns to his upper body, cuts to his hands, and was spitting up blood. The D.A.’s Office said “the residence sustained damage consistent with an explosion, such as broken windows, warped and melted appliances and scattered debris.”

Chemicals and Powders Found in Home
A search of his home turned up calcium fluoride, compressed air tanks, ammonium nitrate and various powders and chemicals commonly used in manufacturing explosives or fireworks, the D.A.’s Office said.
He initially went to the hospital for treatment, left the hospital, and returned again later for more treatment. Following his release the second time, he was arrested and has been in custody since his arrest.
Halpin’s next court appearance is November 3.
