UMass Study: No Increase In Gambling Addiction With Casino Open

Researchers say the introduction of casino gambling in Massachusetts hasn't led to an increase in gambling addiction or related problems yet.

The study released Thursday by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that admissions for problem gambling treatment have continued to decline even after the opening of the slots parlor Plainridge Park, the state's first casino, in 2015.

It also found there's been no increase in overall crime, divorces, restraining orders, child welfare cases and personal bankruptcy filings statewide.

The state-commissioned study of the social and economic impacts of casinos was launched in 2013 and is billed as the most comprehensive ever attempted.

MGM opened a major resort casino in Springfield earlier this year and Wynn Resorts is slated to open one in the Boston-area next year.
