A New Bedford man charged with two arsons in the North End earlier this month has now been arrested for seven more fires in the area, closing the book on a frightening time for residents in the affected area.
The public is invited to meet Capt. Amos Melo, the new commander at Station 3, and discuss issues of concern in the North End during two separate events this week.
Increased patrols in New Bedford's North End, with unified efforts of the gang, narcotics and uniform patrol division, resulted in 12 arrests over the weekend. Ten of the people arrested were from New Bedford, with one from Wareham and one from Lawrence.
New Bedford Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro announced that Lt. Amos Melo will be promoted to captain and will become commander of Station 3 in the North End District, effective Oct. 15.
The New Bedford Police narcotics unit arrested three men and took cocaine and a knife off the streets Wednesday, as part of an investigation into street-level narcotics sales in the city's North End.
