Swansea Fire Department Extinguishes Fire at Case High School

SWANSEA (WBSM) — The Swansea Fire Department responded to a fire Thursday afternoon in the cafeteria of Joseph Case High School.

According to Fire Chief Eric Hajder, the department received an automated box alarm at about 2:55 p.m. on June 6 indicating smoke inside Case High School.

Students had already been dismissed for the day, and no students remained in the building at the time of the fire.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke in and around the ceiling of a first floor hallway, and soon discovered a fire burning in a storage room off that highway.

The firefighters were able to contain the fire in that storage room and then extinguish it. Hajder said the school did suffer fire damage in that storage room and smoke damage throughout the first floor hallway.

The school will be closed on Friday so the damage can be cleaned up.

No injuries were reported.

"Companies did a great job stretching multiple hand lines into the building, finding the seat of the fire, and containing the fire to a single storeroom," Chief Hajder said. "This fire could have been much worse without the quick action of the companies that responded."

Hajder said the cause of the fire remains under investigation but it appears to have been accidental.
