NEW BEDFORD — Authorities are investigating an apparent stabbing death in a known homeless encampment in New Bedford.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III says the victim is a 41-year-old homeless man, who appears to have been living in a homeless encampment in the woods of off Nauset Street.

Investigators were led to his body, which was located in a heavily wooded area adjacent to General Supply and Metals, Inc., located at 47 Nauset Street, early Thursday night by two other homeless men who reported the death to police. The deceased is the apparent victim of a stabbing.

With the assistance of the New Bedford Fire Department, the body was removed from the heavily vegetated area between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Thursday night, and is now in the custody of the state Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy to determine the exact cause and manner of death will be conducted.

The investigation into the apparent homicide is being coordinated by First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg.

The victim’s identity is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and Homicide Unit Prosecutors are actively investigating the homicide.
