A citation has been issued against former Patriots player Brandon Spikes involving a Sunday morning crash on Interstate 495 in Foxboro.

Massachusetts State Police say they issued the citation after determining that the 27-year-old Spikes was speeding and driving negligently when he crashed his 2011 Mercedes Maybach into the back of a 2009 Nissan Murano.

The occupants of the Murano, identified as a Billerica man and woman and their 12-year-old son, were transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro with minor injuries.

Troopers located Spikes' abandoned vehicle in the median off the northbound side of I-495 shortly before 3:30 a.m.

The vehicle had significant front-end damage.

State Police say that before the driver fled the scene they were contacted by the Mercedes onboard assistance service which had detected the crash.

The driver claimed to have struck a deer.

Troopers found no evidence of a deer, but responded to the Murano's location around the same time and found evidence the vehicle was struck from behind.

Spikes was summonsed to appear in Wrentham District Court on charges of Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash; Operating a Motor Vehicle Negligently to Endanger; Speeding; and Failure to Stay Within Marked Lanes.

The date for that appearance has yet to be determined.
