Inflation is impacting most folks in the Greater New Bedford Area right now. Some people are feeling the pinch a little more than others and may, for the first time in their lives, be considering asking for help.

There is no shame in seeking assistance, especially if it means the difference between your family being warm or going cold this winter.

Food prices have skyrocketed. Gas prices, while down slightly, are still considerably higher than they were. As we recently reported, National Grid has announced a 64 percent rate hike for electric customers and a potential increase of 22 percent for natural gas customers.

Massachusetts is anticipating $37 million more federal heating assistance for needy families than it received last winter. Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, grants are generally dispersed in November but could be early this year due to the greater need.

Anyone in the Greater New Bedford Area needing heating assistance should contact People Acting In Community Endeavors (PACE) to apply.

According to the PACE website, "If eligible, Fuel Assistance will help pay a portion of winter heating bills. Homeowners and renters, including those whose heat is included in their rent, can apply for fuel assistance."

The Fuel Assistance Program at PACE serves residents members of New Bedford, Fairhaven, Marion, Mattapoisett, Dartmouth, Acushnet, and Rochester.

If you live in a community not serviced by PACE, find additional fuel assistance programs at MASSCAP Fuel Assistance Directory.

The Fuel Assistance Program has income eligibility guidelines that are explained on the PACE website, along with information about other energy programs available to those in need.
