It's mind-boggling how many people are infatuated with the black bear that's been spotted all across the SouthCoast. If I'm being honest, to quote Ms. Taylor Swift, it's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me.

There's just something so fascinating about the bear local authorities have been advising us to keep our distance from that makes us want to get closer. I'm not saying we should get closer to it, but that doesn't change the fact that everyone and their mother seems to be out looking for the poor thing.

Even businesses are putting a brilliant marketing angle on the black bear. My Facebook newsfeed has been flooded with memes.

I've seen restaurants photoshopping the bear standing in parking lots eating popular dishes. Upcoming events are using cutouts of the bear to encourage attendance. The real estate community isn't immune, either,.

We've been monitoring the bear ever since it was first seen in Mansfield on May 16. So many sightings have come in, we've created an interactive map to give you a sense of where the bear has been and where it could surface next.  We call it the 2023 SouthCoast Bear Tracker and have been updating it daily.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife believes the bear spotted in New Bedford and Acushnet on Tuesday is the same black bear that has been seen this month in Dartmouth, Fall River, Franklin, Freetown, and Taunton.  People who see a bear in a populated area are advised to contact the Massachusetts Environmental Police.
