South End Public Safety Center Up for a Vote
The New Bedford City Council may take a historic vote Thursday night.
The Council's Finance Committee is recommending adoption of a $17-million loan order for the construction of a new Public Safety Center at Brock Avenue and Ruth Street.
The loan order would also cover the demolition of the former St. Anne's Church and school building at the site.
The project was first proposed by the Mitchell administration several years ago. When the complex is completed, it will include the first new fire station constructed in New Bedford in decades.
The structure will also include a new South End police station and space for emergency medical service units as well.
Mayor Mitchell is also submitting two loan orders for $2.2 million for repairs to the John Avery Parker Elementary School and Trinity Day Acadamy, and $360,000 for repairs at the Elizabeth Carter Brooks Elementary School.
