A Sobriety Checkpoint will be in effect in Plymouth County this weekend.

Colonel Richard D. McKeon, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, says the checkpoint will begin on Friday and run into Saturday.

The checkpoint will operate on a public way and will operate during varied hours.

McKeon says the selection of vehicles won't be arbitrary, safety will be assured, and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety.

The stated purpose of the excercise is to "further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways."

The Sobriety Checkpoint is being funded through a grant provided by the Highway Safety Division of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
