SHREWSBURY (WBSM) — When the Ground Round returned to the Massachusetts dining scene recently, Gen X kids and elder millennials were happy to see that classic menu items such as the Slider Sundae, the Ooey Gooey Flower Pot, the Pot O Gold and the Cinnamon Dippers would be returning as well.

After all, what would dining nostalgia be without some of those favorites?

We never expected, however, that Ground Round would bring back its most famous promotion: the penny-a-pound “Kids Pay What They Weigh” deal. After all, how could a restaurant afford to offer such a deep discount on a menu item in today’s economy, even if it is one from the children’s menu?

Well, the Shrewsbury, MA restaurant (the lone location right now) announced today that the promotion is returning, and you don’t even need to get on a scale to take advantage of it.

“Pay What You Weigh” Was Always a Little Embarrassing for Heavy Kids

The way it used to work, you’d walk into Ground Round on the days it offered the penny-a-pound deal and kids would get on a large, old-timey-looking scale. The host/hostess would then write your weight down on a sticker and affix that to your shirt.

Heavier kids were always a little self-conscious about strolling through the dining room to get their table while advertising their weight to everyone they passed.

No Need to Get on the Scale Anymore at Ground Round

We spoke to a manager over at Ground Round who confirmed that if kids don’t want to get on the scale or tell the server their weight, there is a flat-rate price of 65 cents for a kid’s meal.

However, there are some rules regarding the promotion. First, it’s only available on Tuesdays, and only for kids 12 and under.

Also, it’s one penny-a-pound kid’s meal per adult entree purchased. So if two adults come out with two kids, both kids pay what they weigh. If it’s two adults and three kids, one of the kids has to pay the full menu price of their meal.

What’s on the Ground Round Kids Menu?

Kids can choose from popcorn chicken with fries or applesauce, a hamburger or cheeseburger with fries or applesauce, macaroni and cheese, or campanelle pasta with butter or marinara sauce.

All kids meals include a choice of either milk, soda or juice.

And For Kids Scared of Clowns, You Don’t Have to Watch Out for Bingo

As we previously reported, Bingo the Clown will remain retired and won’t be roaming around the restaurant. Instead, you’ll encounter the Ground Round Hound, whose official name is now Peanut, the winning entry in the naming contest.
